Defective Medical Device - Sulzer Hip Implants
On December 8, 2000, Sulzer Orthopedics, Inc. announced the recall of its Inter-Op acetabular shell for hip implants which has affected over 17,000 patients to date. Due to a manufacturing problem, some products were left with machine oil on hip joint replacements. The oil prevents the patient's hipbone from adhering to the medical device resulting in insufficient grafting into place. Symptoms of a defective implant include pain during walking, rising from a seated position and weight bearing. Thigh and buttock discomfort has also been noted as possible adverse side effects.
